Short story competition

In October we anounced the winners of Glasgow UNICEF short story competition at our crimenight. The judges crimewriters Karen Campbell and Helen Fitzgerald commented on the high standards of the entrys and they had some hard decisions to make.
We have included some of the entrys (with authors permission) for all to enjoy.

Short Story Competition

UNICEF SHORT STORY COMPETITION

Got it in you to cut to the marrow and chill the heart? Then why not enter Glasgow UNICEF's short story competition?
The topic is 'crime', the word count is 1,500 words and the way you write it is entirely up to you! The only stipulation is that we'd like the phrase: 'out of the darkness' to appear somewhere in the story.

Crime stories can be crafted in a number of ways - from cosy whodunits to searing psychological thrillers. It might be you want to come up with an ingenious twist in the tale, a narrator who can't be trusted - or what about examining crime from the victim's point of view?

Whatever way you approach it, Glasgow UNICEF would like to hear from you. The closing date for the competition is 1st September 2009. Each entry costs £6, with all proceeds going to UNICEF. Entries will be judged by writers Helen Fitzgerald & Karen Campbell, with the winner receiving £50 book tokens and the story will be published in localpress (currently under negotiation). The winner will also be presented with an award at UNICEF's Glasgow Crime Night in October by prominent crime writers Helen Fitzgerald/Karen Campbell.

Crime night

The group are currently working on a fund-raising event which also be interesting and fun.

We are hoping to access a local theatre or similar venue for free (otherwise secure sponsorship).

Two local crime writers Helen Fitzgerald and Karen Campbell have generously offered us their time to take part in the event.

We are in the process of working out the details.

We are confident this will be a great evening.

See us at The Southside Festival 23/05/2009 and 24/05/2009

Hi,

We have our launch planned for The Southside Festival where we have a stall for two days.

The event is at Queens Park Glasgow 23/05/2009 and 24/05/2009

The group will attend to hopefully meet and recruit new members, create publicity for UNICEF and The Glasgow Group.

The stall will have leaflets and information regarding UNICEF campaigns.

At the same time we look forward to the fun of the festival.

If you can offer sponsership or have ideas how we can make this a successful launch at the festival please contact us.

Enthusiastic volunteers required urgently

The Glasgow Unicef Group is a brand new group and urgently requires volunteers to join the committee and/or join the group to help contribute and progress ideas.

If you are genuinely interested in helping us raise awareness for UNICEF and fund raise then please send us your details. If you do not want to post details on the blog, tell us your interested on the blogg and give contact details to Helen Aikman at UNICEF UK helena@unicef.org.uk and she will pass your details on.

See the post regarding the annual plan and see if this is for you. You will note that the group requires various skills and you may have just the skills ideas and time we are looking for.

In the coming month we have stalls planned at local events, are looking towards a good publicity launch and around August we have plans for a crime night at a local venue with local authors.

The New Glasgow UNICEF Group

Throughout Britain there are groups for UNICEF long established earning this charity a remarkable sum.

How then has The city of Glasgow been previously missed out?

Glasgow is a generous city and there is a wealth of skills just waiting for the potential to be realised.
To this end The Glasgow UNICEF group was set up and officially started on the 1st Of April 2009. NO this is not a joke. The new group is serious about fund-raising and making Glasgow a successful contributor to UNICEF.

SO WHAT DOES UNICEF DO AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT GLASGOW CONTRIBUTES

Did you know UNICEF works in the UK as well as internationally?
Unicef works in the UK to champion childrens rights and to win support and raise money for children everywhere.

Unicef is a charity and is the worlds leading organisation working for children and their rights. It works with families local communities, partners and governments in more than 150 countries to help children realsie their full potential.
Children are supported through the provision of healthcare, nutrition and education.
Unicef protects children affected by crises including war, natural disasters and HIV?AIDS.
The UN convention on the rights of the child which protects the rights of children everywhere and has been adopted by almost every country in the world underpins all of UNICEFS work.

UNICEF is not funded by the UN. IT relies entirely on volunatry donations.

UNICEFS SIX BELIEFS

Every child has the right to the best possible start in life. It is wrong for children to die needlessly;it is imperative to prevent their unnecessary deaths

Every child has the right to the highest standards of health and education. It is imperative to work to attain these standards.

Every child possesses righjts inherently equal to every other childs. It is imperative to defend all children from violence, exploitation and discrimination.

To protect the rights of every child, and invest in her or his wellbeing, is the surest way to end poverty and to build peace and security in the world.

It is possible to give every child a good start in life. The world can, if it chooses, ensure that every child grows and develops to their full human potential.

Children are citizens of the communities and the societies they live in. Their voices should be heard and their potential heeded by all.
